August 24: The Pamplin Pulse
Welcome back message from Interim Dean Robin Russell
Dear Pamplin Hokies and friends,
The start of the new academic year brings much optimism, and we have an exciting semester and year ahead. The Blacksburg campus is buzzing with students, faculty, and staff starting their first day of classes this week. Our faculty are continuing to participate in research with real-world positive impact. Nearly 200 undergraduate TAs are beginning the semester, gaining invaluable educational and professional growth experiences along the way.
When asked this summer by Provost Clarke to serve as the Interim Dean of Pamplin this academic year, I accepted this invitation instead of my long-planned retirement after 40 years at Virginia Tech and the last 5 years as the Department Head of BIT. I served on the search committee for Pamplin’s next dean last year and the consensus was that we have not yet found the next dean, and conversely, Pamplin’s next dean has not yet found our community. We will have updates on the dean search throughout this academic year. This is an exciting deanship at a historic moment for Pamplin.
The first building under construction in the Global Business and Analytics Complex (GBAC) continues to transform with visible progress observed every day and the architect selection for the next building in GBAC is nearing completion. In Northern Virginia, our graduate programs continue to see strong enrollment by industry leaders across every sector.
We are looking forward to engaging with many Pamplin alumni this semester. Whether cheering on the Hokies at Lane Stadium together or through a host of upcoming Pamplin and university alumni events – which will be shared here in the Pulse – there are lots of ways to stay connected.
I look forward to seeing all our Pamplin Hokies this semester. Thank you for your continued support of the college.
