ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - The deadline is looming for people to file their taxes, and that means it is more important than ever to stay vigilant and make sure you are protecting your information.

Voices of Privacy Hosts and Virginia Tech Professors Dr. France Bélanger and Donna Wertalik joined Here @ Home to talk tips to manage your privacy.

First, the pair explained that electronic filing is more secure than mailing a tax return because it is encrypted and cannot be read.

The professors also explained that tax filers need to keep an eye out for scams like unexpected notices by text or email claiming to be from the IRS.

Additionally people should request an ID protection PIN to avoid someone from using your information to file a false return.
