Every dollar raised during Virginia Tech’s Giving Day has the potential to be transformational for the colleges, departments, and programs involved. Thanks to the tireless efforts of benefactors to the Pamplin College of Business, Giving Day 2022 has a couple hundred thousand more opportunities to be transformational.

Giving Day is a 24-hour fundraising sprint, led by “ambassadors” who want to maximize the good Virginia Tech can do for its students and the global community. This year, Giving Day runs from noon to noon EST, Feb. 23-24.

Much of the success of Giving Day can be traced to these ambassadors and the “You+2” program. Giving Day ambassadors make their gifts using a unique ambassador link and encourage two other Hokies to make a gift through the same ambassador link on Giving Day. Ambassadors are provided with a Giving Day toolkit – complete with sample social media posts and images, answers to frequently asked questions, etc. – which will help spread the word about Giving Day. Please visit our Giving Day ambassador page to become a Giving Day ambassador – it’s not too late!

Giving Day is all about participation and building community through philanthropic engagement, so different Giving Day challenge goals are directly tied to the number of unique donors to the Pamplin College of Business. Pamplin’s goal is 2,116 unique donors through gifts ($5 minimum) to one of 25 fund areas on the Pamplin Giving Day designations list. Donors may give to more than one area of Pamplin, but they will be credited only one time as a unique donor.

The Pamplin Leaderboard Challenge will unlock an additional $100,000 in funds to the top 10 Pamplin units (departments, centers, and programs) with the most unique donors on Giving Day. The Pamplin unit with the highest number of unique donors will be awarded an additional $20,000, with the remaining funds to be distributed on a sliding scale based on their leaderboard ranking.

The Pamplin Leaderboard Challenge is possible thanks to donations by: Tracy Castle-Newman (FIN ’90), Mike Clarke (FIN ’83), Gary Cole (BIT ’92), Brian Cook (’79, MBA ’81), Doug Curling (ACCT ’76, MACCT ’77), Kendley Davenport (MGT ’84), Lynne Doughtie (ACIS ’85), Don Halliwill (ACIS ’90), Jeff Hartman (MGT ’79), Jim Hatch (MACCT ’72), Starlette Johnson (FIN ’85), Mark Krivoruchka (MBA ’81), Carmen Liuzzo (ACIS ’83), Jake Lutz (FIN ’78), Floyd Merryman (MGT ’81), Don Neff (ACIS ’90), Debbie Petrine (MGT ’78), Bridget Ryan-Berman (BUS ’82), Richie Whitt (ACIS ’87), and Chris Xystros (ACCT ’84).

For the Pamplin GBAC Challenge, gifts to any Pamplin fund will automatically unlock additional funds for the Global Business and Analytics Complex, up to $100,000. This new learning environment will be Pamplin’s new location on campus when it is completed.

The additional GBAC funds are made possible by Mary McVay (ACCT ’78, MBA ’81), one of the project’s biggest champions. McVay pledged the initial $1 million to support the effort when it was first announced and later pledged another $1 million through the McVay Challenge, announced at the March 2021 GBAC groundbreaking.

The Global Business and Analytics Complex is one of six top presidential priorities of Boundless Impact: The Campaign for Virginia Tech. The complex will consist of two academic buildings as well as multiple living-learning communities oriented around business, analytics, and international affairs. The first building of the complex, the Data and Decision Sciences Building, is currently undergoing construction near the intersection of Prices Fork Road and West Campus Drive.

As a Giving Day bonus, all Pamplin academic departments and Pamplin's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging program will receive an equal share of additional total bonus funds of $14,000 when Pamplin reaches its unique donor goal of 2,116 donors for Giving Day.

Virginia Tech will also hold various challenges throughout Giving Day, each with its own monetary reward. Any university challenges won by Pamplin throughout Giving Day will be shared with all participating units.

This will be the fourth Giving Day in Virginia Tech’s history, and the first to have an in-person component since 2019. In coordination with the student leaders in Pamplin, as well as the students in PRISM, Pamplin volunteers will be staging an in-person Giving Day Headquarters in the Pamplin Atrium. The headquarters will “open” at noon, Feb. 23, and will feature Giving Day giveaways, as well as a Giving Day student participation booster event with pizza at 5:15 p.m.

Pamplin looks to build upon the overwhelming success that was Giving Day 2021, which saw the college raise over $1.6 million from 1,690 unique donors, both of which were tops among all other Virginia Tech units. All told, over 12,000 alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends combined to provide over $6.3 million for the university’s colleges and programs during Giving Day 2021.
