Howard Feiertag Department of Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM)
The Virginia Tech Chapter of CMAA is a student affiliate of a worldwide professional organization that represents the club management profession. Through membership, students gain a better understanding of the private-club management industry and its many career opportunities. Chapter activities include monthly meetings, club site visits, socials, and fundraising events. The chapter raises money to send students to the annual conference that generally draws 4,000 club professionals and 500 students. HMA is comprised of students who plan to enter the hospitality industry as professional managers in any of the industry’s diverse fields. Members gain experience in developing, planning and executing multiple events and activities. HMA assists with the department’s annual career fair, organizes theme dinners that coincide with the HTM department’s Industry Advisory Board meetings, and recruits industry guest speakers for monthly meetings and professional development workshops. The association also hosts a fall and spring networking trip to destinations where tours of hotels, restaurants, private clubs, and tourist attractions are featured with the intent of gaining additional insight and exposure to the hospitality industry. Theme Park Management Association is dedicated to connecting students with the dynamic world of theme parks, attractions, and entertainment. Our mission is to showcase the many facets of business and hospitality that bring this exciting industry to life, from operations and guest experience to marketing, analytics, and event planning. TMPA hosts speakers and brings students to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAPPA) global conference in Orlando, Florida. An international honor society that recognizes academic excellence of hospitality management students. Eta Sigma Delta is part of the Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Educators (CHRIE). Students in the academic top 20 percent of the department are invited to join this prestigious society beginning their sophomore year. Members engage in network opportunities, host professional learning programs for industry certification, conduct social activities and provide professional service to the industry. NSMH is a national organization representing an array of social and cultural students backgrounds with chapters at many U.S. universities. NSMH emphasizes the benefits of a diverse workforce to the hospitality industry. Members travel to regional events that network students with company sponsors, industry representatives, and other hospitality organizations, advisors and mentors. The HTM SAB serves as the voice of our students, providing feedback monthly to the HTM and ideas regarding our academic program and the overall Feiertag HTM student experience. Automatic membership is included for the president of each HTM registered student organization (currently HMA, CMAA, NSMH, TPMA, and ESD) and HTM members of the Pamplin Dean’s Advisory Board. Additional at-large members will be added each spring for the next academic year via an interest/application process. The SAB will meet approximately 4 times per semester with the HTM department head or her/his designee.
