This past Wednesday, January 24th, thousands of students and company recruiters filed through the doors of Cassell Coliseum for Pamplin’s “Superbowl of College Recruiting”. Better known as Business Horizons, this premier event provides students with an unparalleled opportunity to network with some of the nation’s top companies and recruiters.

The event attracted over 100 different companies belonging to several different industries. Business Horizons hosts employers who are seeking stand out students that are in need of summer internships, co-ops, as well as part-time and full-time jobs post graduation.

 

This is the second Business Horizons event held in the 2017-2018 school year. Jennifer Carty, Associate Director of Career Services and Employer Relations for Pamplin’s Undergraduate Programs states, “ Business Horizons continues to grow in both student and employer attendance year after year. It is one of the only events on campus in which hundreds of employers can interact with thousands of students under one roof.  Hundreds of jobs and internships result from initial conversations at Business Horizons.” In fact, for the last six years, both fall and spring fairs have sold out with an observed 10% increase in attendance.

By partnering with the Smith Career Center and utilizing the Hokies4Hire system, the interview process is simplified for both recruiters and student applicants. On January 25, the day following Business Horizons, hundreds of interviews are conducted right on campus. Business Horizons itself is run almost entirely by students, comprised of committees that specialize in corporate correspondence, hospitality, publicity, IT and logistics.

 

Junior BIT student, Ryan Sharifi voices his input of the event, “ I find that being a student at Business Horizons is exciting because this one of the first sneak peeks we get into the real world. Not only do you get a taste of the corporate world, but it is an awesome opportunity for students to expand their interests  see where their strengths and weaknesses are in the job seeking process. It is cool to see so many Tech students all working towards similar goals.”
