Joel McPhee
Joel McPhee is the Business Controls and Enablement Executive for the Global Real Estate and Strategic Initiatives group (GRESI) which is a part of the CAO Division at Bank of America Corporation. He and his team serve as the central point of management and coordination for a number of critical risk activities across the group. These activities include risk and governance controls, data management and governance, issues management, and quality assurance to name a few. Prior to his current role Joel led the QA and Risk team for Enterprise Scenario Planning and Execution (ESPE), which supported the banks efforts to meet its obligations for the Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) and Global Resolution and Recovery (GRRP) requirements.
A former Senior Executive at Wells Fargo, Inc. (Wachovia), Joel held critical assignments including Group Risk Officer for the company’s Operations and Technology division, as well as heading its Global Delivery Center (Offshoring and Outsourcing). During his time at Wells he also successfully led what is heralded as one of the most successful transformation initiatives in the bank’s history. Through this initiative he managed a cross-enterprise team which reduced Wells Fargo’s $3-billion-dollar Cap Ex and Revenue project portfolio by approximately 40%. In addition to driving significant savings, the effort re-engineered critical company processes.
Joel is also an Attorney and published Author. In his debut book, Mastering Strategic Risk: A Framework for Leading and Transforming Organizations, (John Wiley & Sons, April 2014), he provides a new governance model detailing how to effectively lead organizations through challenging times. He also co-authored the article “Why Government Regulators Need Corporate Boot Camp” for The Washington Post. Joel also serves as a guest lecturer in Virginia Tech University’s Pamplin College of Business Leadership Academy.
