Review this video or the step-by-step instructions to learn how to schedule an appointment in Navigate.
Types of Academic Advising Appointments
30-minute "Pamplin Academic Advising" Appointments
During most of the year, Pamplin academic advisors offer both in-person and virtual 30-minute scheduled appointments. Pamplin students can schedule a 30-minute appointment up to two weeks in advance.
30-minute advising appointments are important if you have more detailed questions or concerns, such as:
- Course/Graduation Planning
- Major exploration
- Incorporating study abroad and other co-curricular activities into an academic plan
- Navigating academic policies
15-minute "Pamplin Express Academic Advising" Appointments
During busy advising times (first week of classes, Course Request, W grade deadline), Pamplin academic advisors only offer virtual "express" appointments to make sure they can assist as many students as possible.
- Express appointments are for brief or time-sensitive questions or situations.
- If you think you will need more than 15-minutes to discuss your situation, it's best to schedule a regular 30-minute appointment during a non-peak time.
These appointments can be scheduled by selecting "Pamplin Express Academic Advising" as the service in Navigate.
Make the Most of Your Appointment
Schedule your appointment early. Your academic advisor's schedule can fill up quickly during peak advising times like Course Request and the beginning of the semester. Plan ahead to make sure you can meet and get your questions answered.
Make a list of questions and topics to cover. Advising is a collaborative process and your academic advisor will expect you to be prepared and actively engaged in the discussion.
Show up on time. Whether your appointment is virtual or in-person, it's important to show up on time. If you think you may be late to your appointment, email your advisor to let them know. If you need to cancel your appointment, you can do this in Navigate.
Follow through. Make sure to complete any tasks recommended by your advisor (e.g. declare your option, apply for your degree, etc.). Your advisor may also suggest that you utilize other campus resources in order to best address your questions and situation.
Reviewing Your Appointment Notes
Need to remember what you discussed during your advising appointment? You can review notes and recommendations from your academic advisor in Navigate. Checking your appointment notes can help you stay on track with your academic plan, remember important next steps, and prepare for future registration and advising conversations.
