Accessing Pamplin Academic Advising Services
Whether you just have a quick question or want to discuss long-term planning, academic advisors are a resource to support you on your undergraduate journey. See the guide below for the best way to connect with Pamplin advising.
Schedule an academic advising appointment with your assigned academic advisor (current Pamplin students)
Pre-scheduled academic advising appointments allow students to have more in-depth conversations. Advising appointments are important if you have more detailed questions or concerns, such as:
- Course/Graduation Planning
- Major exploration
- Incorporating study abroad and other activities into an academic plan
- Navigating academic policies
Get the details on scheduling, appointment types, and tips for making the most of your appointment.
Academic Advising Appointments →Ask a question via email
Many of your quick questions can be answered via email. Send a message to your assigned academic advisor to ask about:
- Important dates and deadlines
- Transferring credits
Visit or Call the Undergraduate Programs Front Desk
Staff at the front desk are available to answer many of the questions you might have and point you towards important forms and resources. You can visit them in Pamplin 1046 or call 540-231-6602.
Ask them about:
- How to declare a minor or major
- How to change your major option
- How to find campus support offices
- How to utilize course registration tools
If your email involves multiple topics, requires a detailed discussion, or would take several emails to answer, your advisor may ask you to schedule an appointment instead.
Plan Ahead for Success
Your academic advisor is here to support you, but it's important to remember that advisors are people too! Like students, advisors balance many responsibilities, including supporting many other Pamplin students through appointments and emails, attending administrative meetings, working on projects, and managing personal commitments outside of work.
- Pamplin academic advising services are appointment-based. Most of the time, it's not possible to have a same day appointment with your advisor.
- During busy times of the semester, such as the first week of classes, course registration periods, and academic deadlines, advisor schedules can fill up quickly.
- Email is great for quick questions. But if your concerns require an appointment-length response, your advisor may ask you to schedule a meeting instead. During busy periods, you may need to wait some time for the next available appointment.
- It may take several business days for you to receive an email response, and academic advisors generally do not respond to messages outside of business hours (Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm).
- Your assigned academic advisor is your primary point of contact for advising support. If their calendar is full, please wait for their next available opening rather than reaching out to another advisor. This helps us provide you with the most consistent guidance.
To make sure you get the help you need when you need it, plan ahead whenever possible! Don't wait until the day before a deadline to ask questions, request a signature, or schedule an appointment. Reviewing important deadlines early, checking available resources, and reaching out in advance can help prevent last-minute stress and ensure you have enough time to receive guidance.
