First, I would like to reaffirm President’s Sands notion that Virginia Tech is in fact an institution on the move – and I am proud of the role Pamplin has played in that progress.

Students and faculty from 12 countries will gather at Virginia Tech to compete, collaborate, and network at the annual Global Entrepreneur Challenge, hosted by the Apex Center for Entrepreneurs, on August 16-25. Marriott Foundation grants $2.1 million to Virginia Tech Global Business and Analytics project
Fundraising for the construction of Virginia Tech’s proposed Global Business and Analytics Complex has taken another big step forward, with a $2.1 million grant from The J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation. The four-building complex is expected to include two academic buildings and two residential buildings for living-learning communities — and to serve as the new home for the Pamplin College of Business.

Virginia Tech students travel to Israel for Capstone Project
As the fourth industrial revolution is upon us, Virginia Tech students undertook a capstone project that challenged them to leverage a number of technologies to accelerate progress in many different IT domains. Included were Cloud, Al, ML, robotics and loT. The graduate students worked with Amdocs to create a value-based model for automation in IT to reduce the "run-the-business" operations and increase Amdocs growth. Amdocs is a leading software and services provider to the world's most successful communications and media companies. The team trip was guided by Linda Oldham, Executive Director, Center Business Intelligence & Analytics in the Pamplin College of Business. Several Amdocs executives sponsored the project and spent 2 days supervising its further development. They included Tomer Simon, IT Futurist, Director of Innovation & Academic Collaboration, Rupesh Guikwad, Global Technology Manager, Hanoch Sapoznikov, Lead of worldwide Academic Relations, and Alex Polyak, Global Technology Manager.

The high cost of college textbooks and other learning materials is a challenge that many students have difficulty overcoming, causing them to either take out unnecessary loans or refuse to purchase required course materials. VT Pamplin College of Business Propels 2018 Leaders
On the afternoon of Friday May 11th, Blacksburg welcomed families with a beautiful sunny afternoon, and Dean Robert Sumichrast greeted nearly 1,100 students who completed Pamplin degrees to their final festivity as undergraduate students. Ceremonies to celebrate those who received their MBA, specialized masters and Ph.D. degrees were held on Thursday, and ceremonies for those who earned degrees in the NCR were held on Sunday.

The Curling Fellowship in Accounting and Information Systems was established in 2008 through a gift from Doug C. Curling, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from Virginia Tech. The Pamplin College of Business 27th Annual Del Alamo/Hogan Business Ethics Symposium took place on March 20th at the Graduate Life Center. This year’s symposium featured Virginia Tech’s own Marc Edwards. Dr. Edwards is the first keynote speaker from Virginia Tech in the symposium’s history.

In memoriam: Laurence J. Moore, professor emeritus of business information technology
Larry Moore, professor emeritus of business information technology, died Feb. 14, 2018. He was 79. A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1970, Moore was a key administrator in what is now the Pamplin College of Business during the ’70s and early ’80s.

A group of researchers at Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business won the Design Science Award from the INFORMS Information Systems Society for creating a suite of text analytics tools that can identify hazards in consumer products before they intensify into a more dangerous situation.

Dr. Inès Blal, a Pamplin PhD alumnae, has been named Executive Dean of Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL) located in Switzerland. Dr. Blal is the first and youngest woman to be appointed into this position since the foundation of Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne.
