four students enjoying the picnic with food and fellowship

Over 700 Pamplin College of Business faculty, staff, students, and guests – including numerous four-legged friends – gathered on the Holtzman Alumni Center Lawn on Friday, August 30, to “kickoff” the new academic year.

Started in 2014 by Pamplin Dean Robert Sumichrast, the Pamplin Kickoff Picnic serves as a fun way to not only welcome back returning Pamplin students, faculty, and staff, but also to embrace the newest members of the Pamplin family, especially first-year students.

Guests were treated to a picnic-style dinner provided by Professional Catering, Inc., while they listened to music by Roanoke-area band Empty Bottles. Children, as well as some of the more adventurous adults, entertained themselves on a rock wall, an inflatable obstacle course, and a three-lane bungee run provided by Dave’s Moonwalk and More. Those wishing to cool off in the afternoon sun did so by treating themselves to complimentary shaved ice from Kona Ice.

“I believe the event went well,” stated Amy Transue, assistant director of special events for the Pamplin College of Business. “The weather was great, and the students, as well as the Pamplin faculty and staff, seemed to really enjoy themselves.”
