Dr. Joe Simpson

Dr. Joseph Simpson is a Collegiate Assistant Professor of Management and the Director of the Integrated Security Education and Research Center (ISERC). He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration, an M.B.A., an M.S. in Homeland Security Management, a Graduate Certificate in International Security Studies, and a B.A. in Intelligence Studies. His research examines security strategies, their effects on decision making and attitudes, and his work has been published in top business journals including Tourism Management, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of Travel Research, and Journal of Business Ethics as well as security related journals including Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and Journal of Cybersecurity Education Research and Practice (forthcoming). He has presented his research at national conferences including Academy of Management and Southern Management Association. Additionally, he engages in a number of university-wide initiatives at Virginia Tech including the National Security Institute Planning Group, the Senior Military Colleges grant worth over three million dollars between 2019 and 2021, the Analytics LLC. steering committee, and Studio+ as part of the Calhoun Discovery Program.

Prior to joining Virginia Tech, he started three companies with his wife totaling approximately 30-40 employees and multiple facilities which he still manages. Additionally, his family business is expanding into other cities and is in the process of starting a new business, featuring a 30,000 square foot state of the art building. He has served on multiple boards of directors. His work experience also includes ten years of military special operations and nuclear weapons security.
